Monsal, Demon & High Dales

The Peak District National Park was created in 1951, the first national park in the UK. Walking in the Peak District can be quite varied, with the more gentle limestone dales of the White Peak and the higher, gritstone moors of the Dark Peak, meaning there’s something for everyone.

Monsal, Demon & High Dales

We are big fans of this walk. It takes in one of the finest, and most popular, Peak District viewpoints – Monsal Head – but also visits some lesser known paths and dales with equally brilliant views. There’s plenty of variety, with woodland, tracks, little dales and villages, with refreshments along the way.

The walk starts from the car park just off the A6 west of Ashford. Taddington is the first destination, reached via footpaths and paths that climb up onto the edge of the limestone plateau. The views are magnificent as you approach Taddington.

It’s then a walk across fields to the steep sided High Dale, before a short climb up onto a track high above Monsal Dale that brings you to Monsal Head itself and the Headstone Viaduct. A short but steep climb up to the Monsal Hotel provides the opportunity for refreshments, but after that it’s all downhill. A path takes you down into the dale and across the river, with an amble alongside the Wye back to the car park to finish.
